On Soup Dumplings and Patti LuPone

Dumplings

I had two transcendent experiences this weekend that led to a revelation

1. I had been craving a good soup dumpling since a weirdly fruitless visit to Shanghai in the fall. While for some reason I had a hard time tracking them down in the city of their origin, I of course had no problem finding them at Joe's Shanghai in Chinatown. My hankering was humored by small, delicate buns bursting with a rich, porky explosion of meat and broth.

2. Then I saw the revival of Gypsy. Despite Patti LuPone's compact, pint-sized package, she exploded on stage with a robust energy that had just the right hint of ham in a deliciously diva-esque performance as Mama Rose.

The revelation: if Patti LuPone were a food, she'd definitely be a soup dumpling.

Hi there. I saw Patti in Gypsy during the Sunday matinee this weekend. I thought she was glorious. Loved her, loved the show.

And I love me some dumplings!

Long time reader, first time poster! Dumplings and LuPone drew me out. I'm going to see the show next month. How's the 'Gotta have a Gimmick' scene? Alison Fraser is my sister. Do you have a favorite dumpling place in Boston? Do they deliver? Tonight? To 30 miles away?

"Gotta Have a Gimmick" had the house near tears from laughter and Alison Fraser was great. If she were a dumpling, she'd be... shumai! Enjoy the show. Sorry, I'm not up on Boston's dining scene--maybe other readers can help out.

Patti Lupone IS a food and she is a pasta...

How funny that so many think of Patti and food.

Ha! She does mention food quite often on her "Ramblings from the Road", so she sort of brings it about herself... But it is quite funny...
