Academy of the Overrated: Corner Bistro

It's been a week of old chestnuts, hasn't it? Yesterday I stopped in for a late lunch at Corner Bistro for the first time in eons. Crazily enough, at 2:30 on a Wednesday the place was packed and there was a wait for tables and even the bar. It must be making the rounds in all the guidebooks because the crowd was heavy with tourists. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the hordes seem to be affecting the kitchen. The burger arrived cold and undercooked. We sent back the fries, which tasted like they had been sitting around for a week. The replacement plate was only mildly better. I hit it right with the chili, though. Spicy and flavorful, it was perfectly seasoned, if a little watery. Still, it wasn't enough to change my opinion that the glory days are gone for this legendary spot.

Oh, come on. No one really goes there for the food. And when we do, it's late at night so we can grab a booth, drink away the pressures of the restaurant, grab a burger and soak some fries in ketchup.

Actually, Michael, back when the Meatpacking District was a meat market (rather than a meet market), and before a certain HBO series stripped the West Village of it's last ounce of soul, even the occasional intrepid heterosexual would journey to that obscure corner of the globe, precisely for the food. Being less than intrepid myself, I didn't get there until about a dozen years ago (so I might have missed the place's "glory days"), when I found the burger to be perfectly fine, but far from the ambrosia I'd been led to expect. That said, if every corner bar served a burger like the one I ate that night, the world would be better for it.

corner bistro was probably one of the biggest disappointments of my eating adventures in this city...
what are you going for if not the food? a long wait? bad eye candy? a line of frat guys waiting for tables? dry burgers? puh-LENTY of other places to go in this city...
