Third Avenue in the East Village has always been a tough sell. Once the porn theaters and crackheads were driven out, it never really seemed to find its identity beyond pizza chains and frat bars. Ironically, it's a former Pizzeria Uno space that plays host to what looks like the strip's biggest hit in ages--the Smith. Owners Glenn Harris and Jeffrey Lefcourt have already proven their populist savvy at Jane, and the Smith seems to follow the same something-for-everyone template. But does quality get overlooked in the desire to feed the masses? Read our critic's review, and also our takes on Lebanese newcomer Illili in the Flatiron, upscale Park Slope Mexican restaurant Piramide and seven more new and notable restaurants.

Alchemy's Late Night Menu and Happy Hour

Alchemy

Before signing off for the long weekend, thought I'd share this nice bit of news about Park Slope's hardware store-turned-restaurant Alchemy. I haven't been there since it changed chefs awhile back, but I can vouch that the space couldn't be cozier. With many people enjoying a long Turkey Day weekend filled with long nights and heavy boozing, the restaurant's new happy hour and late-night menu couldn't be better timed. Through the end of 2007, drinks are two-for-one and food is half-off weekdays from 4pm to 7pm, while a new late-night menu offered Thursday through Saturday from 11pm to 1am includes fare like burgers and fish and chips--and each food order comes with a free half-pint of beer. Be sure to check our full list of restaurant and bar deals.

Like, Totally Awesome Cali-Style Mexican

You know those folks from California who can't stop complaining about the lack of West Coast-style Mexican restaurants in New York? Well, I'm one of 'em. Since I moved to New York in the early 90s, I've hunted for burritos like the ones in San Francisco and fish tacos that would pass muster in San Diego. Of course, I realize neighborhoods like Sunset Park offer wholly authentic Mexican cuisine, but sometimes you're just in the mood for the Americanized version. So imagine my surprise to find salvation in Park Slope at the few-years-old Rachel's Taqueria.

Rachel's makes burritos big enough to carry in a BabyBjorn, chile verde enchildas served with a side of red beans that are spiced with something other than grease, and brightly flavored salsa chunky with fresh tomatoes. And, while they're missing cabbage, the fish tacos get everything else right, especially the fiery mayo topping. On top of it all, there's a lovely back garden where you can take your food after ordering at the counter.

According to their website, the owners' first restaurant was in Riverside, Calif. Eventually, they went on to open the Original California Taqueria in Cobble Hill, though that spot is now under different management (and nowhere near as good). They do, however, still own Park Slope's La Taqueria, which I'm now curious to try. Any fans out there?
