Second Helpings: Fiamma and L'Impero's New Chefs

Fiamma

Though the comeback of rustic Italian was definitely the big trend of the year, a few shakeups at more high-end Italian restaurants made headlines as well. Michael White, formerly of Fiamma, moved over to take over the kitchens of Alto and L'Impero after the departure of Scott Conant. Taking White's place at Fiamma was Fabio Trabocchi, a James Beard-award winning chef from Virginia. With their new chefs going full steam, can these haute destinations still compete with popular dressed-down counterparts like Morandi and Gemma? Click through to read our reports on recent visits to Fiamma, L'Impero and more restaurants worthy of a second look. We haven't made it over to Alto yet, but would love to hear the thoughts of anyone who has.

Second Helpings: Leela Lounge

Leela

Our Second Helpings feature highlights restaurants that we've revisited, restaurants with new chefs, and also restaurants we might have overlooked. Falling into the latter category is Leela Lounge, an Indian spot near NYU. With a large banner written in a bad font hanging outside and a lounge scene cramming the windows up front, it's one of those places where you can't imagine the food being any good. And though Chicken Leelapops aren't going to win any points for authenticity, it would take a real grinch to deny their snacky goodness. The only problem with the place? The lounge part seems to be hopping while the restaurant area is so sleepy, it's hard not feel like you're missing the party. Click through for the full scoop on Leela Lounge.
