A Real Retreat

Skanaspamineralpool_1I wasn't sure what to expect from Turning Stone, a megaresort in Verona, New York. It's one of those developments with five golf courses, four hotels, two spas, a full-blown casino and a nightclub in the works--all of it clumped together on an Indian reservation. I was both excited and wary. The website looked promising, and there's no way I could turn down an invitation to try the new luxury Ska:na Spa, but I was also banking that I'd be spending all my non-treatment time with retirees.

Not so. Turning Stone may be a glorified amusement park, but with at the Lodge--winner of numerous hotel awards--and the whole landscape blanketed in snow, you'd never know.

From Paris Runways, With Love

Since New York Fashion Week, the city has been recharging through other forms of entertainment. Even though we were all grateful for the Armory show, popping Chinese firecrackers down Elizabeth Street, and singing along at the Arcade Fire concert, we must not forget that somewhere in the world there's a fashion show.  Let's cruise over to Paris to check out what's going on during that city's Fashion Week.

I think we've had enough time to cry and drool over Parisian's Haute Couture collections, but just look at Dior's take on Madame Butterfly and Gaultier's mesmerizing references to icons.

Some outstanding collections this fall include: Nicholas Ghesquiere of Balenciaga who dressed up, tough, exotic, school girls in blazers and ethnographic prints (left photo), Yohji Yamamoto who introduced streetwise girls in headwraps and bouncy ruffled skirts (center photo) and Jun Takahashi of Undercover who consciously combined textile technology with knits to create environmentally sound clothes with an edgy sportswear chic (right photo). Parisians have definitely proved their love for the fashion forward.  Have you been keeping up with Paris? Let us know what you think so far.

Wine Bath for One

Delluvaoscarperez
My first association between spa treatments and alcoholic beverages came with the April 2006 New York Times story about beer spas. However, that spa experience requires a trip to eastern Europe, not something on my current agenda. I was, then, delighted to hear that I could at least have my wine and drink it too at the new Delluva Vinotherapy Day Spa in Tribeca.

The spa's signature treatment, the TheraVine Barrel Bath, has a slightly misleading name--you are not actually sitting inside a barrel--but that aside, the treatment is perfect for winter-weary skin. Once you've nibbled all the free nuts and fruits and thrown down a few glasses of complimentary vino, you're ready for the thorough grapeseed scrubdown to remove dead skin cells and invigorate. After a shower comes the soak in a tub of red-hued water. You're not actually soaking in wine, but in grape skin juice and some essential oils. The tub itself is deep with enough jets to bubble you up to the surface, but I was too occupied with munching frozen grapes to care about jet settings. One unsettling note: By the end of the bath, the water had turned from red to black (oxidation, I'm guessing), but at that point, warm-bath drowsiness had overcome me. The service is $120 for 60 minutes and $175 for 90 minutes, and includes a body oil rubdown at the end.

Sometimes, when I get nervous ...

MollyshannoncloseupWhy perfectly respectable skin care line Cetaphil would pair with Molly Shannon for a celebrity endorsement is beyond me. The assocation with Mary Katherine Gallagher is too strong, and the only image that it leaves me with is this: A pair of soft, moisturized, beautiful hands gliding through air and then suddenly getting smashed into some armpits and aggressively sniffed.

If you want to get a whiff yourself, Shannon will be promoting the products during a three-day pop-up event at the Daryl Roth Theatre near Union Square, March 8-10. Expect skin care tips, hand massages and dermatologist consultations.

Balenciaga Paris

Balenciaga_1Friday night I was lucky enough to check out "Pamela Golbin presents Balenciaga Paris" at the French Institute Alliance Française. The slideshow consisted of beautiful pictures of both Cristobal Balenciaga's and Nicolas Ghesquiere's creations, with Ms. Golbin dropping such interesting tidbits as:

-During WWII, fabric was limited to 1 ½ meters of fabric per piece of clothing, which forced Balenciaga to experiment with volume and create his signature look

-In 1956 Mr. Balenciaga gained complete control of the company, making it the only independent fashion house of the time.

-He stuck with his models, even as they passed 60 years old.

The piece de resistance was a breathtaking white wedding dress, made with a single seam. Absolutely amazing. If only Ms. Golbin's book wasn't $85.

Dangerous Beauty

There is nothing more amusing that traipsing around a gallery full of women who've had work done while they look at art blatantly critical of today's current unattainable beauty and fashion standards. So I suggest that anyone who enjoys a good stab of irony should check out the Chelsea Art Museum's current show, "Dangerous Beauty," showing now through April 15. Though occasionally too didactic, the work on display jumps both seriously and playfully around the quest for ultimate beauty.

SavonbodybarsizedA few of my favorites: The Ralphs by Davis & Davis. The piece is a set of four brilliantly colored photographs, one of which is above, showing various members of a doll family ralphing into the toilet.

Another standout: Nicola Costantino's project Savon de Corps where she uses fat from her own liposuction to make bars of soap, shown in the nearby photo. The art itself is the "Saturday Night Live"-esque video she makes hawking her body fat in a bar.

I suppose I lean towards the laughter-is-the-best-medicine approach to beauty stereotypes because my third favorite was the three photographs by Erwin Olaf from his Mature Series, in which old women (grandmother old) pose in skimpy clothing and suggestive poses. You can check out more photos in our Fashion Geek Flickr pool.

I'd like to thank ... Bleecker Street Pizza!

Whether you're throwing an Oscar party or just snuggling up with your comforter in front of the TV, you're gonna need energy to make fun of all that bad fashion. Pizza and Chinese takeout are as much a part of Oscar tradition as, say, Rob Lowe shimmying with Snow White. Some of our favorites for delivery: The thin-crust pies from Bleecker Street Pizza, the many locations of Grand Sichuan for Chinese, the Second Avenue location of Pongrsi for fiery Thai, and Dinosaur BBQ for smokin' ribs uptown. Or, if you really want to blow your future Oscar-pool winnings, have a entire lobster dinner delivered. And don't forget plenty of chips--you'll need something to throw at the TV when Mr. Academy makes his yearly snooze-inducing speech.

Dollyparton

Hello warm front! My main suggestion for this weekend is to roam the town in search of an outdoorsy event, but since you can't trust the weather, here are a few of the gazillion art- and fashion-related events happening this weekend. I guarantee many interesting fashion sightings.

1. Between the art show at the Armory, Scope New York, the Red Dot Fair and Pulse Art, you'll have art seeping from your pores by the end of the weekend. Of course, we all know that Williamsburg has the best runway for strutting the latest fashions, so check out the Williamsburg Gallery Association's after-hours event this Saturday.

2. Bust out your superhero costumes and check out the New York Comic Con this weekend, featuring a slew of industry folk, including the cheerleader from Heroes.

3. It's Oscar Sunday and the city is offering up various events and parties for celeb and film fanatics. Check out a few of the listings on our weekly Hot List.

4. For cheap deals on vintage Chanel, Dior and YSL, roll over to the Tribeca Grand Hotel for the EMG Vintage Sale.

5. If, by chance, you are dying for more art, celebs and fashion, you can't miss the David LaChapelle (see photo) show at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery.

Snapshot: Fierce Casting Duo

Rebasabel

Names: BFFs, Sabel (left) and Reba (right)
Live: Astoria and Bushwick
Spotted: At NY Perks

What do you guys do for a living? Sabel and I have a casting company called Rebel Casting. We just finished casting a film titled "In Person: The Oscar Jordan Jazz Quartet," and we're scheduled to cast another film called "The Way" in April. I also co-own a company with my boyfriend Ross called Everyday People Casting where we cast real people, non-actors in commercials. We've worked with MTV, Food Network and various others. Sabel is also a senior casting associate with Grant Wilfley Casting INC.

Wow, you ladies are busy. When you do find the time to shop, where do you usually go? We're both into thrift stores and flea markets and funky boutiques like Patricia Field or FAB 208, and then of course we love Marc Jacobs, Prada, Gucci, that's when we can afford it.

Reba, what has your been your fashion inspiration lately? Recently, I like the modern twist on the Factory Girl, the Edie Sedgewick look. Leggings with long tops, tights with little dresses, shorts with boots. I think Sabel's style fluctuates a lot between what she calls "thrift store chic and around the way girl."

Sabel, what's something about New York that you love? I moved here for school but stayed here for the energy, the culture and, most of all, the people. After 9 years, I'm still discovering so many new things I never knew about. Summer is my favorite time in the city because of all the free stuff to do: free concerts, McCarren Pool shows, eating Spanish coconut-flavored ices, people watching.
