The Laziest Costume of All

The day before Halloween is upon us and I'm sure most of you have your packaged costumes from Ricky's ready to go. Some of us on the other hand have resorted to poking holes in our bedsheets for that old school ghost costume (go here for directions). Desperate partygoers who cringe at the sight of yarn and scissors should check out these witty Halloween T-shirt costumes instead.

Sci-fi geeks rejoice! Urban Outfitters is carrying a line of Star Wars T-shirt costumes, including R2D2 (photo, left), Darth Vader and Chewbacca.  Wanna blend in with the rest of the sexy costumes but lack the guts to pull off an apron and feather duster? This French maid costume from t-shirts (photo, right) along with the sexy nurse and sexy cop T-shirt is your answer (caution: next day delivery may be a bit pricey). Gather a crew of dancers, some white gloves, plastic switch blades and this M.J. shirt (photo, below) from Threadless and "Beat It" through the Halloween parade. Happy Halloween!

New Release: My So-Called Life DVD Set

Posted at 02:18:41 PM in Television
by Keith Wagstaff

Mysocalledlife_2My So-Called Life is, in my opinion, the best drama ever shown on television. Nothing before or after it ever captured the awkwardness of growing up quite like My So-Called Life, and despite its short run (only 9 months) in the mid 90s, the show still has a huge fan base. Fans have, until now, had to get their Angela fix with a discontinued DVD set that suffered from poor quality and lack of special features.

Luckily, a new higher-quality DVD set is being released tomorrow, full of interviews with cast members and writers. The New York Times recently ran an exceptional article explaining why the series is so good.

Now there is no excuse not go out and buy the DVD, whether at a local store or online.

Latest Obsession: Capes

Delias_4Urbncape Marccape

Lately, I've been obsessing over capes, wraps and, dare I say it, ponchos--basically anything that makes you look like a superhero, in the above case, a romantic, vintage heroine with cupid-like abilities. There's also been recent buzz surrounding the superhero--just take a peak at the NBC hit series HEROES, and Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy, the theme for the anticipated Costume Party of the Year and fashion exhibition in May. Having Halloween in the air has also encouraged me to consider the classic cape in a Little Red Riding Hood ensemble or a medieval sorceress costume (two severely under-played costumes!).

But whether or not you buy into all this hype, the cape does function as a warm shield from the chilly weather. This Ashely capelet from Delias (above, left) may be an interesting addition to the trendsetter's wardrobe. For the hipster wardrobe, Urban Outfitters is selling this Lux cape (above, right) at their stores and online. Demure ladies looking to easily blend the cape into their winter wardrobes should go with this cape from Marc by Marc Jacobs (above, bottom) through eLuxury.

Wow, you look swanky! Let me guess, expensive suit? Nope! My suit is Mauro Grifoni from Daffy's, my shirt is H&M, my shoes are Via Spiga from Century 21 and the scarf is Anne Klein, but I got it as part of a gift bag from a Parson's Gala.

Besides finding a good bargain, where do you usually hang? I really like all types of places. I prefer hole-in-the-wall restaurants. One of my favorite places for campy decor, spicy food and margaritas is Los Dos Molinos. Casa is also great for Brazilian food, caipirinhas and catching up with old friends. A good escape for a Manhattan or a martini when it rains is the Bemelmans Bar in the Carlyle Hotel. It's a sweet little slice of New York history.

What are you dressing up as for Halloween? I'm going to be a tacky tourist. It is really a cop-out. I am not big on dressing up. I went to Beacon's Closet and got the tackiest early '70s polyester pants and shirt. It is so bad, it looks like Prada!

Sale: Chaiken

by Keith Wagstaff

Chaiken Sale
Oct. 23-26
at 261 W 36th St, 2nd Fl

The problem with fashion is that so many designers elicit praise for collections that most people, outside of the wild downtown hipster, would deem unwearable. Chaiken, however, is that successful brand of smart chic that can be worn at the hippest Soho party or an office in the 'burbs. Now the label is on sale, with winter coats, cashmere sweaters, pants and more starting at only $100.

Don't forget to check out the rest of Citysearch's New York sample sales.
