Calm Seas at Uniqlo/Tim Hamilton Collab

TimhamiltonsmallThe Tim Hamilton collaboration with Uniqlo premiered today at Uniqlo's Soho store. The scene? Madness! If by madness you mean the opposite. There were a few people perusing the offerings, which were stationed near the entrance to the left, not upstairs in the men's section where a few confused guys were looking for it (including myself).

I bought a cardigan and pair of gray jeans. I really liked the washed-out color palette, elongated proportions and, of course, the prices. Make sure to get there soon! Or later, or whenever, it doesn't seem like they are running out soon. I guess as fashionable as New York men are, they just don't go ga-ga over big designer collaborations. Now, the release of the Alexander Wang collection will probably be a completely different story, so don't take today as a sign you don't have to show up early when the Wang line is released.

Store Preview: Cry Wolf

Posted at 03:04:43 PM in East Village shopping, Just opened
by Keith Wagstaff

Cry_wolf_wide

Cry Wolf is the rare store that carries chic, cooler-than-thou clothing but still maintains a friendly, laid-back atmosphere. That's mostly due to the owners, a husband-and-wife team consisting of Abiri Ward and Nina Wolff (below), whose welcoming demeanors are a nice break from the aloof attitudes that plague this city's boutiques.

And the clothing? Think sophisticated clothes for the arty downtown hipster set. The store carries up-and-coming and established men's and women's designers including Unruly Heir, Nudie Jeans, Junk de Luxe and Morphine Generation, to name a few. The sneaker selection is also something special: Shoes from Gram and Clae are unique without resorting to peacock-like displays of wild color.

Cry Wolf's official open date is April 3rd, although it's going through something of a soft opening right now.

Spring Eyewear

Spring = nice weather, nice weather = spending time outside. Thus, if my mathematical computations are correct, you will need new sunglasses. Sunglasses that give a big, plastic jolt of bold color is the new trend everybody is talking about, perfect to complement your Yves Klein jeans.

The coolest designs we've seen so far are from Karen Walker (above, available at Den) and Henrik Vibskov (available at Oak). Not to say your Ray-Bans are out of style; they're not. I'm just suggesting you add a little color to your collection.

Croc Alternatives

Swims

Listen, I love Mario Batali. He's a good-natured, talented chef and I wish him nothing but luck. But that doesn't change the fact that Crocs are ugly and unacceptable.

Still, it has been rainy lately and you don't want to get your nice shoes (and feet) soaking wet. May I present an alternative? They're called SWIMS, and they're from that magical land of innovative design and tall blond people known as Scandinavia (Norway, specifically). What's so genius about them? These sleek galoshes fit over your own shoes so you can just take them off when you get to your destination. Basically, you don't look ridiculous while out and about in wet weather, and once you get inside you can just slip them off. Thank you, Norway, thank you so much.

You can find SWIMS for men and women at Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales.

Monogram by Banana Republic To Open Up Shop

Posted at 01:50:06 PM in West Village shopping
by Keith Wagstaff

BrHow does one make Banana Republic sound preppier? The term "banana republic" itself conjures up images of poor countries with corrupt governments which are wholly dependent on agriculture and ravaged by colonialism. Fun! Polo by Ralph Lauren and J. Crew sound much more like labels you would wear while playing badminton at your father's summerhouse.

The solution? Create a label called Monogram by Banana Republic and open a concept store in the very un-third world West Village. The stand-alone Monogram store will open on April 7 in the converted space of the Banana Republic on Bleecker Street. In case you were wondering, Monogram is Banana Republic's urban chic look, with a darker palette suitable for the office.

Store Spotlight: Permanent Records

Have you heard the news? Steve Jobs has killed the record store. Well, apparently Williamsburg and Greenpoint never got the memo, because the neighborhoods boast a bevy of record stores like Permanent Records, Soundfix, Earwax and Eat Records.

One of our favorites, Permanent Records in Greenpoint, moved to Brooklyn from Northport, in Long Island. The store has a great selection of vinyl and new and used CDs, plus the staff lacks the hipster snark that makes some record stores (ahem, Earwax) unbearable. Last week, we talked to Permanent Records owner Marjorie Eisenberg about vinyl, Greenpoint and Guided by Voices.

FG: Do you think vinyl will be the lifeblood of records stores from now on?
ME: I've been hearing that. I'm definitely hearing that the CD format is dead, and it's all about vinyl. It's pretty much been about vinyl for me for a long time anyway. As for the death of the CD—I definitely see it slowing down, but you can't count it out just yet. I've focused so much on the vinyl, but I still have customers say "Oh, what about the CDs?" I'm kind of worried about every label putting out every single thing on vinyl though--I think that will clog up the works.

Bling in '08!

Hillaryobamajewelry

We all thought this primary election would be over by now. You've taped a huge "Hillary '08" sign in your window. You've sent will.i.am's "Yes We Can" video to everybody you know--twice. Isn't there a flashier way to support your candidate of choice?

Yes, with gold! Or silver. Phoenix Roze, quite possibly New York's smallest jewelry boutique, has produced a set of necklaces ($65) and pins ($45) depicting Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Now, finally, people distracted by small, shiny things will know who you support for the Democratic presidential nominee.
