Name: Ashley and Tom
Spotted: Union Square Station
Occupation: Pastry Chef and Hairstylist
Lives: Out of town

You guys are looking swanky! Where are you headed to? Chinatown, we're going to Nam Son for some traditional Vietnamese pho.

What have you guys been doing in New York? Eating and shopping--is there anything else to do? I did get my hair cut at the The Beehive, and Prune and Momofuku were some of our favorite dining spots.

Where have you been shopping? Ashley loved H&M and Soho for shopping but I usually shop at thrift stores and couldn't find anything to compare to the bargains down south. I did get this shirt from Atlantis Attic in Brooklyn.

What's the latest trend for pastries and hair? Savory desserts are all the rage and the free form, razor, windblown look with a subtle splash of color is really hot right now.

Too Skinny!

SkinnySkinny3

The recent fashion runways have me pondering if models these days are healthy? Catwalk Queen posted an interesting article on possible sponsorship withdrawal from London Fashion Week due to concerns over the health of models but I wonder, will money cure the obsession for the overly skinny? Shouldn't we be questioning why we think this is attractive? Taking a look at the controversial ad by photographer Oliviero Toscani featuring an Italian model who has been anorexic for 15 years and you wonder when will this crazy trend for skeletal models be over? I know I'm ready for some normal, dare I say it, shapely models!

Shopping Guide: Fort Greene

Fortgreene

What, you say, there are more neighborhoods in Brooklyn besides Williamsburg and Park Slope? That's right, junior, in fact New York's most populous borough contains a multitude of vibrant, distinct neighborhoods.

Today we are going to talk about Fort Greene, once/now home to such esteemed figures as Walt Whitman, Colson Whitehead and Rosie Perez. Also, sometimes people shop there, as well as eat food.

The shopping scene reminds me a bit of Astoria's: diverse, unique and without the Soho attitude.

Stuart & Wright has already garnered quite a bit of favorable press. It carries a lot of the chic lines carried in other fashionable boutiques in the city: A.P.C., Steven Alan, Lyell, etc. Good taste in fashion, but I wanted to check out a boutique with offerings that were a little bit more unique. Tessan was a cute little boutique that sadly lacked A/C. Despite this fact, I was impressed by the international array of clothing and accessories from places like Ghana, France and Senegal.

One of the odder stores was RePop, an eclectic vintage store that carried everything from vintage dresses to a giant cross that said "Jesus Saves." I came this close to buying a vintage typewriter, but figured hauling it around to different bars later that night would be a bad choice.

I also had the good fortune to stop by Karen's Body Beautiful, where they mix their own beauty products inside of an in-store kitchen.

It's time to up your Brooklyn education. Do it by checking out Citysearch's Fort Greene shopping guide, restaurant guide and bar guide.

Eat 'n' Shop: Chocolate Bar in Henri Bendel

Chocolate_bar
Makeup mecca Henri Bendel just added an outpost of the West Village's Chocolate Bar on its third floor atrium. Though the chocolates are far from cheap, they're impeccably crafted, and almost look like tiny makeup kits themselves. Oh yeah, and they taste pretty good too.  As a bonus, this bar also serves wine and champagne, a crafty way to induce just a little more shopping afterwards. The real question: Are there plenty of mirrors and handy wipes to remove any post-snack schmutz?

Drop Dead Gorgeous

Drop Dead Gorgeous is a pageant held monthly at the Beauty Bar's six locations across the country. Despite the associations a "beauty pageant" carries, this event's tongue-in-cheek kitsch is more on par with the satirical movie it's named after than with the traditional taffeta-and-doublestick-tape type of contest.

The theme was 60s glamour, and pro stylists hired for the occasion made sure the contestants looked the part with cat eyes and sky-high hairdos. MC Dick DeVille was decked out in a retro outfit complete with fedora, and asked the girls anachronistic questions:

"How do you feel about the conflict in Vietnam," he asked. "Do you believe it's a necessary measure to stem the tide of global Communism, or do you take a more isolationist stance?"

"I don't get it!" Contestant #3 giggled.
