It's time to give New York's most populous borough some love. Brooklyn Fashion Weekend (because really, who needs a whole week?) kicks off tomorrow, and you can go. That's right, no need to be Andre Leon Talley, just RSVP here.

There will 21 designers showing their spring 2008 collections, all hand-picked by the non-profit Brooklyn Style Foundation, including Malan Breton from Project Runway!

It's all going down at Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in DUMBO, Fri-Sat at 7pm and Sun at 6pm.

Ebony_31. The touring Ebony Fashion Fair hits the Apollo this weekend--expect to see Diors, Oscar de la Rentas and YSLs.

2. The New Yorker Festival starts tonight with a round of intellectual partying, music and lectures.

3. Don't deny your love for the Caribbean, art and dancing--check out the Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum.

4. If you haven't seen Blade Runner (it's a fashion must-see) and strongly believe in robots, go see Ridley Scott's release of Blade Runner: The Final Cut playing at the Ziegfeld this weekend.

5. Launch parties usually mean cheap booze and free food, but mix in a fashion celebration and you've got some perfect weekend action. Help Yours Truly launch their streetwear label at Hope Lounge, or check out the debut of web boutique The Shiny Squirrel at Supreme Trading and DenimHunt.com's open bar at Don Hill's. So many choices it hurts!

Hiya! What are you up to? Heading downtown to F.I.T. for grad school.

Besides school, what else do you do? I work at the Brooklyn shop Bird and I'm also a part-time nanny.

Love your attire, where do you usually shop? I got this skirt at Anthropologie and these boots from Zoe in Brooklyn. Bird also carries one of my favorite labels, Circus and Company, they have the most amazing graphic prints.

In between the loaded work and school schedule, what are some of your favorite hangouts? I'm allergic to wheat so one of my favorite gluten-free places is Rissotteria, and for drinks the Black Mountain Wine Bar.

Hey, nice day out, eh? I love this school girl thing you got going on. Thanks, I got this blazer from my old job as an assistant designer at At Last Sportswear. It was a sample from the junior line. I don't think it ever went into production. The skirt I got from a clothing swap circa 1998 from my friend Kitty in Richmond, Virgina and the shoes I got from Target.

Nice variety of places. Do you have any favorite shops in Brooklyn? My all-time favorite shop was a shoe store on 7th Avenue near Union Street in Prospect Park. It was a great source for cute vegan shoes but they closed about two weeks ago. I'm still in mourning.

Any favorite hangouts? My neighborhood, my couch with my kitties and La Taqueria. I could eat the vegetarian fajita burrito everyday. Tea lounge is also a great place.

What are you into these days? Fashion, hobbies? I love Oscar de la Renta's craftsmanship and the conceptual pieces from Victor & Rolf. I'm currently feeling inspired by 18th century menswear and 19th century childrenswear . . . it's what I'm studying in grad school, but it's stirring design ideas more than anything academic.

McCarren Pool Party Fashion Report: July 8

Note: The entire July 8, 2007, McCarren Pool Party photo album is here.

The recent spate of perfect weather has finally left us, i.e., it's really f*cking hot now. Evidence of this was seen yesterday at McCarren Pool, where people tended to cluster around the misty/shady tents benevolently provided by Helio rather than mill about and expend precious stamina. But the heat always brings out a little bit of crazy in people, especially people who like Dan Deacon, apparently. As pictured, a dedicated group of colorfully dressed fans jumped sweatily up and down, sang along, and, following Dan's lead, gently chastised the rest of the crowd for not doing the same ("It's OK," he said. "You can still have fun!"). Dan even got a few damp hugs. His fans really, really like him.

Unsurprisingly, there were more bathing suits and a much longer line for the slip-n-slide than last week. In true Williamsburg form, many girls had managed to get their hands on well-cut vintage swimsuits from various decades. The ick factor of buying a used swimsuit aside, now I want one too.

Event sponsor Redbull brought in a new toy this week, namely a bizarre splash-volleyball court where everyone stands in a hole like a gopher and tries to hit the ball when it comes within reach. When asked why Redbull decided to do such a thing, the Redbull rep lady said "Why not?" Why not indeed? Redbull is so free spirited.

Frye Does Heels

Fryeturquoiseheel One of my weekend rituals is stopping by Soula in Boerum Hill to gaze at shoes that my budget really doesn't have room for. This weekend, I discovered the store has heels made by Frye Boots. I didn't even realize Frye made anything but their line of butt-kicking boots, but a quick tour of Zappos tells a different story with pages and pages of the brand's footwear that includes clogs, flats, heels and sandals. I had a strange magnetic attraction to these shiny, blue-green peep-toe pumps that Soula is currently stocking. Anybody ever worn a pair of anything other than their boots?

C_waldronNew boutiques seem to be constantly opening in Williamsburg, and Jumelle was the best one to open in 2006. Carrying brands like 3.1 Phillip Lim, Grey Ant, Mociun, Mint and more, the small boutique on Bedford Avenue has become a staple for Brooklyn fashionistas. Owner Candice Waldron, an Emmy-nominated TV journalist and producer who has worked at ABC News, NBC News, CNN and PBS, recently shared her favorite spots in the city with us. She gives Brooklyn lots of love, frequenting Gorilla Coffee and BAM Rose Cinemas. Check out the entire list of Candice Waldron's favorites here.

Snowny_1

For those of us who were stuck in a windowless building yesterday and missed the lovely fall of snow, this weekend will be our chance to break out the earmuffs and snow boots and hit the New York scene with these five fashion events.

1. Take a stroll through Soho and the Bowery on Saturday and tour some of the scandalous brothels and speakeasies through the Dandies, Dudes and Shady Ladies walking tour. After this afternoon exercise, treat yourself to a pre-Valentines gift at the Agent Provocateur sale.

2. Now's your chance to woo fellow co-workers and potential significant others with a more than yummy lunch date at anyone of the fancy restaurants during New York's Restaurant Week. Book now or be very sorry.

3. A fan of Native American arts and culture? Check out the array of costumes and objects in the show Beauty Surrounds Us at the new Diker Pavilion in the National Museum of the American Indian.

4. Housing Works Thrift Shop is finally opened in Brooklyn! Run over to the grand opening in Brooklyn Heights today and purchase some vintage designer goods or antique furniture and donate to under served victims of AIDS in the city.

5. For some reason the Weimar Republic is just a hot topic right now. Head over to the International Center of Photography and check out the photo exhibit, Louise Brooks and the "New Woman," in Weimar Cinema and finish up the day by visiting the MET's exhibit, Glitter and Doom.

Fashion Geek's 2007 Resolutions

Posted at 06:02:13 PM in Brooklyn fashion , Discount shopping, Fashion, Fashion trend, Soho shopping, Style observations, Vintage Shopping
by Keith Wagstaff

New_years_1New Year's is the time when we all nurse our hangovers and think about how we can become better people. In the spirit, Fashion Geek presents its New Year's resolutions for 2007.

1) Go Vintage
You don't have to be Al Gore to see that the environment is in severe distress. One way to save resources is to buy vintage, and the abundance of NYC vintage stores means you can find gently-used haute couture as well as ironic community center T-shirts from Kansas. Check out Tokio7, Zachary's Smile and Peggy Pardon for serious fashion from decades past.

2) Go Green
Ok, so you've bought vintage, but that just isn't enough for you, the urban tree-hugger. You can always buy clothing made from eco-friendly materials like organic cotton and hemp. If you're in the East Village, check out gominyc, which is full of clothing from earth-friendly companies like Loomstate and Del Forte Denim. And remember to check in with Treehugger for advice on environmentally responsible fashion.

3) Save some cash
Looking good in New York doesn't always mean spending a ton of cash. The opening of Uniqlo in Soho makes it easier to find stylish clothes with an edge for much less than at most NYC boutiques.

3) Support the little guy
We all love big-name designers like Nicolas Ghesquiere and Stella McCartney, but it's always nice to buy from under-the-radar and local designers. Treehouse in Brooklyn not only features small runs by designers who could be your neighbors, but the store also holds classes on knitting, embroidery and more, so you can get into the fashion business yourself. And amid the exorbitant prices and flashy designers in Soho is a small boutique called Burrow, which carries fashion-forward designs from up-and-coming, New York designers.
