Oscar Wrap-Up

I generally hate awards shows. The Grammys have become increasingly irrelevant each year, and I've usually never seen any of the shows featured on the Emmys. The Oscars, however, I've been watching every year since I was a kid.

This year there were a couple cool moments: Marion Cotillard's surprised and enthusiastic acceptance speech for Best Actress, Markéta Irglová's encore acceptance speech after getting cut off the first time, and Diablo Cody's very sincere Best Original Screenplay acceptance speech.

The fashion at the Academy Awards was very subtle compared to years past: Black and red seemed to be the most popular colors of the night, perhaps a reference to hardships of the writers' strike.

I thought Anne Hathaway (left) had a beautiful dress, but perhaps a bit too old-fashioned for such a young star. Javier Bardem (right) won my vote for most dapper actor with his fashion-forward but not too flashy suit.

A lot of people didn't like Tilda Swinton's (left) look, but I thought it fit her eccentric personality perfectly. She's an offbeat, talented actress, so anything but a unique outfit--in this case a shimmery, amorphous black dress--would be a disappointment. My favorite dress belonged to the charming French actress Marion Cotillard (right), who played Edith Piaf in "La Vie en Rose." The white, scaly Jean-Paul Gaultier gown fit her perfectly and stood out from the crowd without being too loud or blatantly revealing.

What's a cheery theme to base your collection around? How about Fritz Lang's dystopian sci-fi flick "Metropolis" from 1927? It's got it all: German Expressionism, robots, class struggle.

What does this mean in terms of the collection? Lots of black, metallics and short wigs. Not that I didn't like it; I did, very much so. I loved the dark and dangerous tone to the collection. It was urban to the core, and I think the Russian Mr. Singer has a bright future ahead of him. You can find his collection at Linda Dresner.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week returns Feb. 1-8 at Bryant Park. It looks like another week of Tim Gunn stalking, free cocktails and celebrities for Fashion Geek. Some fun new developments: Yeohlee's show at the New Museum on Bowery, Sean John shows at Bryant Park and, of course, the final "Project Runway" showdown!

Check here for this year's schedule.

ProenzaschoulerbloggersThe New York duo Proenza Schouler can add "fashion bloggers" to their list of talents as they begin today as celebrity guest bloggers for T, The New York Times Style Magazine's website.

Can you think of anything sexier than JT and J. Lindeberg doing a collaboration for a womenswear line?

Speaking of interesting collabs, Ben Sherman is hooking up with PPQ (the London equivalent to Heatherette) to design a dress line.

Miu Miu fans can say goodbye to Lindsay Lohan and hello to Kirsten Dunst, the newly appointed muse for the design house.

Those of us who mourned the death of Diesel's secondary line, Stylelab, should rejoice--the Italian company will debut a similar luxury line, Black Gold, in the Spring of 2008.

It's too early to pick favorites (although I'm a bit partial to the New Yorkers) or to predict who is a style maven or just a fashion pretender, but I do have to say the Season 4 players are quite the hard hitters. Check out my quick list of player stats and tune in tomorrow night to the season premiere. May Tim Gunn be with all of you.

-The boys outnumber the girls by one.
-The average age is 34, the youngest being 21 and the oldest 46.
-One designer has dressed celebs such as Fergie, Jessica Alba, Erykah Badu, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan .
-Three went to Parson's School of Design and two went to the Fashion Institute of Technology.
-One designer co-wrote a D.I.Y. book on T-shirt makeovers while another is a model with a joint degree in Sociology and Fine Arts.
-One designer has 13 siblings and designs a label called Lizalde.
-Of 15 of the designers, 10 have their own professional clothing lines and one has their own florist shop .
-There are two international designers, one from the West Bank and one from Korea.
-One designer has her own Wikipedia entry.
-And does anyone care about the models? Not really.

British Vogue has voted Queen Elizabeth as one of England's top 50 fashion divas. Work it, mama!

Something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving holiday: Topshop has finally secured a New York location for its stateside debut, 478 Broadway in Soho!

I wonder if Vivienne Westwood's new anti-fur stance will apply to her trademark goth leather pieces?

The Olsen twins continue their world takeover with a new sportswear collection, Elizabeth and James. Named after their siblings, the fashion line debuted in New York last week and will be sold at Neiman Marcus.

If you can't afford Manlolo Blahniks or the swanky ensembles worn by the "Sex and the City" girls, you can probably swing a miniature version sold for Barbie dolls, designed by the show's costume designer, Patricia Fields.

Tracy Reese Spring 2008

Tracy Reese, master of the ultra-feminine, is the only show I've been to so far where the designer has received a standing ovation.

Not only that, but I had my first Tim Gunn sighting of the week. I haven't seen his "Guide to Style," but I'm sure it's filled with catty yet scholarly advice that shlubs everywhere would be wise to heed.

The show started off on a Victorian kick, then went into more predictably girly territory in about every hue of violet imaginable (eggplant perhaps, or lilac or heliotrope? Let's just say purple). Plus, there were plenty of parasols and large floppy hats. Who doesn't love that?

You can find Tracy Reese's designs at her flagship store in the Meatpacking District.

Miss Sixty Spring 2008

It was like a Justice League of celebrities at the Miss Sixty show today. Maggie Gyllenhal, Hilary Swank, Demi Moore and Clive Owen were all sitting right next to each other, with Mischa Barton only a few seats away.

Didn't they realize that by sitting together they assembled a Voltron of star power that almost caused the salivating paparazzi to have heart attacks?

Oh, and there was a fashion show. The Italian label, known mostly for its denim, showcased a very youthful collection. Mod prints, minidresses, metallic skirts—this collection was made for party-going young females.

You can find Miss Sixty at the label's Soho store.
