Eat 'n' Shop: Liberty View

For one last little bit of Independence Day fun, we've got a liberty-themed eat 'n' shop suggestion. It's not too often that I indulge my inner clotheshorse in far downtown, but if I do make a pilgrimage to, say, Century 21, a favorite dinner spot afterward is Liberty View. The menu spans Szechuan, Cantonese and Shanghainese cuisine, and though the food gets the job done, it probably won't knock your socks off. The view, however, most definitely will. Grab an outdoor table, order some dumplings and a dirt-cheap glass of Pinot Grigio and watch the sun go down through marked-down designer shades.

This is your weekend to break out your sombreros and maracas and help Mexico celebrate their historic victory in the Battle of Puebla. Yes, Cinco de Mayo day is more than drinking cheap margaritas and twirling one's skirts (see picture). Hit the town this weekend with these Friday fives and drop in on the various Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

1. For shopping, BBQ and a May Pole, head over to hipster land for the Williamsburg Fashion Weekend.

2. It's the first of the month and that means the museums will be the hot spots. Check out  First Friday at the Guggenheim and First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum and the American Museum of Natural History.

3. Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth still haunting you? Find out how to be an eco-fashionista this weekend at Replay's workshop.

4. The Costume Institute's blockbuster show this year opens on Wednesday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year's exhibition showcases the ornamental fashions of French designer, Paul Poiret.

5. Get cozy with Emmett McCarthy's clothes at his sample sale, and check out our complete weekend sale list.

Eat 'n' Shop: Century 21 Edition

Gold_inside2 Let's be honest, the Financial District doesn't exactly scream fashion. Or, food, for that matter. Or pretty much anything except the eternal, almighty quest for the dollar bill. One exception that every fashion-seeker-on-a-budget knows is Century 21, although it can be exhausting to hunt through the piles of oddly tailored Euro cuts in search of that one designer piece that fits. For between-pile breaks, check out nearby Gold St., the brand-new 24-hour diner with a menu that somehow makes room for sushi, diner fare and Kobe beef sliders. Let's hope they've found a way to make these things go together more than, say, men and blouses.

Fashion News Update

Madonnahm_2Madonna's H&M line comes out this Thursday, are we excited?

Everyone has been talking about View From the Fourth Row. Apparently she/he/it is burning lots of bridges in the fashion world. I don't know about you, but the hateration is pretty funny and reminds me of the Fug Girls.

According to WWD, Jenna Jameson has been attending L.A. Fashion shows, "researching" for her own line of day and evening wear. Why is WWD covering this?

A recent conference held by Women's Wear Daily and Harpers Bazaar discussed the long debated issue of fashion counterfeiting. Both publications decided that if they educate the public on why Gucci bags cost as much as three months rent then maybe we'll stay away from Chinatown, hmm?

Cameron Diaz's new fashion philosophy: Wear the same outfit for four days straight and never wear it again. Is this why we have global warming?

Friday Fashion Fives

Happy St. Patrick's day weekend! You're either thrilled or apathetic because green booze will be flowing in every Irish pub, but, regardless, there's no denying that spring fever was in the air. Let us ignore the "wintry mix" that is predicted for the weekend and hit up some New York happenings.

1. Refer to Citysearch's long list of St. Patrick's day events, or, shall I say, pubs, to make your Irish holiday possible.

2. Squeeze in some shopping at the Fashion Alley during this weekend's antique show at Pier 94.

3. Head over to the Museum of Moving Image in Astoria and take advantage of the smartly curated festival, Fashion in Film. Starting this Saturday, the exhibition features film, documentaries and video art.

4. Since March is women's history month, why not partake in the various events around the city? Check out the Bohemian Broads of Greenwich Village historic pub crawl and the group exhibition of female artists at the Cynthia Broan gallery.

5. In case the "wintry mix" turns into "full-blown snow chaos," catch Matthew Bourne's musical adaptation of Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands, closing this month at BAM.

Friday Fashion Fives

The Weather Channel is predicting highs in the low 50s this weekend, so Fashion Geek will be out and about hitting up some Friday Fives. Check out these events and let us know what you're up to this weekend:

1. If you made it to Hot 97's Full Frontal Hip Hop fashion show last night, you may want to check out the Roots in concert this weekend with Lupe Fiasco. While you're out, be sure to check out the Brazilian graffiti show at the Johnathan LeVine gallery, too.

2. Wanna skip out on work today and hit up a fashion and art symposium? FIT is hosting its annual shindig, with registration starting at 9:30am today and tomorrow.

3. It's spring break! Not that it matters to people who have full-time jobs, but still, it's nice to know someone is off in Florida somewhere starring in a Girls Gone Wild video. Hit up some sales this weekend for threads before you go.

4. I predict a huge surge in hat sales this weekend after seeing the museum at FIT's exhibition on New York milliner Lilly Dache.

5. Take advantage of the $20 Bucks, 20 Minutes special on off-Broadway shows. All you have to do is arrive 20 minutes before the show starts and pay a mere $20. See how many shows you can get in before Sunday.
