Say No To Snow Globes!

No, I haven't become an egomaniacal dictator; I've become an egomaniacal tourist! I bought these stamps at the United Nations, where, besides attempting to prevent global violence, disease and hunger, they take pictures of tourists and put them on stamps that are only good at the United Nations. The dude at the counter told me that the stamps are most popular with middle-aged Chinese tourists, but that doesn't mean your mom won't enjoy a postcard with a [Your Name Here] stamp mailed from New York City. What other tchotchkes would your out-of-town guests enjoy?

How about a cool memo pad made from old Metrocards, or a baseball with a subway map printed on it? Whether you are a tourist or just hosting one, check out our "Souvenir Hunter: NYC's 5 Top Tchotckes" feature.

1. If you're in town this weekend be sure to check out the food drive/art show at the New York Design Center. Canstruction features over 45 teams of NY architects and designers who have created sculptures out of canned goods. Last year over 250,000 lbs of food were donated to City Harvest.

2. Since you'll be saving so much on Black Friday, why not spend more at the Seventh on Sale event, hosted by Vogue and CFDA. The sale starts this weekend at the 69th Regiment Armory or online until December 6.

3. Crafting fiends should already be hitting up the Etsy Lab every week but just in case you missed the memo: There's an Etsy Fast Fiber Art Trunk Show tonight!

6. Fashion month continues at the French Institute on Tuesday, showcasing rare screenings of two iconic French fashion films, Breathless and Subway.

5. Take an extended lunch this afternoon and hit up the new MUJI store. Here's an incentive: The first 500 shoppers receive a free bag!

Roberto Cavalli for H&M Has Arrived!

Cavalli_533_2

Happy Roberto Cavalli for H&M Day! The fact that you are sitting there reading this post means you probably aren't fighting through crowds of people to grab a leopard-print dress. Unless, of course, you are reading this on an iPhone, in which case, send us some pictures of the madness!

According to the official Roberto Cavalli for H&M blog, the collection will consist of "leopard print chiffon, leather, fake fur, gold and de luxe denim." Also, Racked via Snack says "Given H&M's generous 30-day return policy, the savvy move is to avoid the dressing room lines, buy what you like, try it on later at home, and then return once the madness has subsided." Smart.

Cavalli himself will be at the 5th Avenue H&M, so I would recommend getting there early. Very early. Happy hunting!

Wow, you look swanky! Let me guess, expensive suit? Nope! My suit is Mauro Grifoni from Daffy's, my shirt is H&M, my shoes are Via Spiga from Century 21 and the scarf is Anne Klein, but I got it as part of a gift bag from a Parson's Gala.

Besides finding a good bargain, where do you usually hang? I really like all types of places. I prefer hole-in-the-wall restaurants. One of my favorite places for campy decor, spicy food and margaritas is Los Dos Molinos. Casa is also great for Brazilian food, caipirinhas and catching up with old friends. A good escape for a Manhattan or a martini when it rains is the Bemelmans Bar in the Carlyle Hotel. It's a sweet little slice of New York history.

What are you dressing up as for Halloween? I'm going to be a tacky tourist. It is really a cop-out. I am not big on dressing up. I went to Beacon's Closet and got the tackiest early '70s polyester pants and shirt. It is so bad, it looks like Prada!

3. Green consumers should check out the fashion show during Eco Fest this weekend at the Lincoln Center.

Fashion Geek's 2007 Resolutions

Posted at 06:02:13 PM in Brooklyn fashion , Discount shopping, Fashion, Fashion trend, Soho shopping, Style observations, Vintage Shopping
by Keith Wagstaff

New_years_1New Year's is the time when we all nurse our hangovers and think about how we can become better people. In the spirit, Fashion Geek presents its New Year's resolutions for 2007.

1) Go Vintage
You don't have to be Al Gore to see that the environment is in severe distress. One way to save resources is to buy vintage, and the abundance of NYC vintage stores means you can find gently-used haute couture as well as ironic community center T-shirts from Kansas. Check out Tokio7, Zachary's Smile and Peggy Pardon for serious fashion from decades past.

2) Go Green
Ok, so you've bought vintage, but that just isn't enough for you, the urban tree-hugger. You can always buy clothing made from eco-friendly materials like organic cotton and hemp. If you're in the East Village, check out gominyc, which is full of clothing from earth-friendly companies like Loomstate and Del Forte Denim. And remember to check in with Treehugger for advice on environmentally responsible fashion.

3) Save some cash
Looking good in New York doesn't always mean spending a ton of cash. The opening of Uniqlo in Soho makes it easier to find stylish clothes with an edge for much less than at most NYC boutiques.

3) Support the little guy
We all love big-name designers like Nicolas Ghesquiere and Stella McCartney, but it's always nice to buy from under-the-radar and local designers. Treehouse in Brooklyn not only features small runs by designers who could be your neighbors, but the store also holds classes on knitting, embroidery and more, so you can get into the fashion business yourself. And amid the exorbitant prices and flashy designers in Soho is a small boutique called Burrow, which carries fashion-forward designs from up-and-coming, New York designers.

Santacon

Name: Kevin and Allison
Spotted: at the Continental

It's a Santa invasion, what's going on? SantaCon is going on. Over 1,000 people dress up as Santa and we roam the city, but we mostly barhop and take pictures with people. It happens all over the country, even in England.

What time does all of this go down? We started off at the Delancey this morning [Saturday] at 10am.

Whoa, that's a lot of boozing. Is that the only reason you guys do this? Nah, we do it in the spirit of Christmas and because the Easter Bunny sucks.

Where can Citysearchers go to buy Santa transformations? It's total slap-haberdashery. We got everything at dollar stores.

Holiday Party Dresses Under $150

Posted at 01:07:29 PM in Discount shopping, Fashion, New York fashion, Party scene, Women's fashion
by Yer Vang

Do you find yourself dreading holiday parties because you never know what to wear? Did you ransack your closet over the weekend only to find that polka-dot prom dress from 1997? Put down that old hag of a dress and step into these fabulous dresses found at four popular retail shops in the city.

We started off at low-budget dress shop Forever 21, where we found the little number (below, left) with sequin detailing for the low price of $37.80. At that price, you'll have money left over to spend in the accessories department. And it'd be hard to go wrong with this floral print dress (below, right) with a velvet empire waist belt found on the sale racks at Anthropologie for $99.95.
