Murakami and Louis Vuitton Come to Brooklyn

Murakami

You might remember that earlier this year I saw Takashi Murakami's "©Murakami" show at the MOCA in Los Angeles. Well now the Japanese artist is bringing his show to the Brooklyn Museum, along with his Louis Vuitton pop-up shop. Handbags aside (which cost between $800-$900), the show itself is something to behold. Murakami infuses his cute, anime-inspired pieces with an underlying darkness, creating a strangely unsettling experience. The show's name points to the way Murakami controversially mixes art and commerce, collaborating with Louis Vuitton and creating a plethora of products with his company KaiKai Kiki.

The Brooklyn Museum's free "Target First Saturdays" series kicks off April this Saturday from 5pm-11pm, featuring a slew of special events including: an anime costume contest to win the "©Murakami" catalogue; Hayao Miyazaki's "Kiki's Delivery Service" playing at 6pm; Brooklyn-based Japanese bands Love Etc. and Sakura Madams; and Japanese DJ Muro aka King of Diggin'.

Oscar Wrap-Up

I generally hate awards shows. The Grammys have become increasingly irrelevant each year, and I've usually never seen any of the shows featured on the Emmys. The Oscars, however, I've been watching every year since I was a kid.

This year there were a couple cool moments: Marion Cotillard's surprised and enthusiastic acceptance speech for Best Actress, Markéta Irglová's encore acceptance speech after getting cut off the first time, and Diablo Cody's very sincere Best Original Screenplay acceptance speech.

The fashion at the Academy Awards was very subtle compared to years past: Black and red seemed to be the most popular colors of the night, perhaps a reference to hardships of the writers' strike.

I thought Anne Hathaway (left) had a beautiful dress, but perhaps a bit too old-fashioned for such a young star. Javier Bardem (right) won my vote for most dapper actor with his fashion-forward but not too flashy suit.

A lot of people didn't like Tilda Swinton's (left) look, but I thought it fit her eccentric personality perfectly. She's an offbeat, talented actress, so anything but a unique outfit--in this case a shimmery, amorphous black dress--would be a disappointment. My favorite dress belonged to the charming French actress Marion Cotillard (right), who played Edith Piaf in "La Vie en Rose." The white, scaly Jean-Paul Gaultier gown fit her perfectly and stood out from the crowd without being too loud or blatantly revealing.

If you're looking for a little Hollywood glamor yourself, check out our "Luxury Stores" and "Socialite's Guide" features.

R.I.P. Heath Ledger

HeathHis roles in "Brokeback Mountain" and "I'm Not There" made many believe he was one of the most promising young actors out there. It looked like his career was taking off; he was escaping the teen heartthrob label and landing choice dramatic roles. His turn in "Brokeback Mountain" was probably one of the best performances I have ever seen, up there with early Robert De Niro and Marlon Brando.

Sadly, he leaves behind a daughter, 2-year-old Matilda Rose. He was 28 years old. [NY Times]

It's Oscar Time

The Oscar nominees were announced this morning! Most people are abuzz over the Best Picture category, but we know what you want know about: Best Costume Design.

And the nominees are ...

"La Vie En Rose," Marit Allen (Photo courtesy of Picturehouse)
"Atonement," Jacqueline Durran (Focus Features)
"Elizabeth: The Golden Age," Alexandra Byrne  (Universal Pictures)
"Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street," Colleen Atwood (Dreamworks)
"Across the Universe," Albert Wolsky (Sony Pictures)

Did you know you can check out movie times, reader reviews and buy tickets on Citysearch's movie page? Yes, I know, the site even surprises me sometimes. Also, if you happen to be near Film Forum in the West Village this week, check out Alain Resnais's "Last Year at Marienbad," the confounding 1961 French classic that inspired Marc Jacobs and features gowns by Coco Chanel.

Fashion and Wes Anderson

Louisvuitton_2
Wes Anderson's carefully created tableaus define his movies' style, so it would make sense that he would spend plenty of time worrying about his actors' clothing. In his latest feature "The Darjeeling Limited," he even went so far as to hire Marc Jacobs to design the brothers' luggage as well as outfit all three main stars (Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman) in Louis Vuitton. [Check out the NY Observer interview with Jacobs.]

The movie itself is less stylized than his last film, "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," and maintains a kind of cheeky, retro charm. It is, alas, no "Rushmore," which happens to be playing during midnight showings at the Landmark Sunshine this weekend, but is still worth a viewing, at least for the stunning scenery and costume design.

From Steve Zissou's Adidas kicks to Luke Wilson's headband/sunglass combo in "The Royal Tenenbaums," Anderson’s characters have always shown plenty of quirky style. A look back ...

Rushmoreracers

Max Fischer: My top schools where I want to apply to are Oxford and the Sorbonne. My safety's Harvard.

Zissou

Steve Zissou: Don't point that gun at him, he's an unpaid intern.

Royaltenenbaums

Richie: I wrote a suicide note.
Chas: You did?
Richie: Yeah, right after I regained consciousness.
Chas: Well what does it say? Is it dark?
Richie: Of course it's dark, it's a suicide note.
Chas: Can I read it?
Richie: No.
Chas: Well could you at least summarize it for us?
