I can't think of a better way to say goodbye to summer than by replenishing your wardrobe with amazing items on sale online. At Creatures of Comfort pick up a variety of items at 50 percent off, like a classic yet unique tuxedo jumper (above, left). Lovers of New York's Oak boutique should pick up something from their menswear selection like this Filippa K striped sweater (above, right) at their online shop, Oak NYC. Bird, a Brooklyn favorite, is also hosting a huge 50 percent sale on its website featuring designers such as A.P.C. and Vanessa Bruno, the designer of the purple bubble dress (below, left). Over at Standard Style, pick up a pair of True Religion jeans at half off or this Phillip Lim belted dress (below, right). While it's always good to stock up for next summer, fans of Opening Ceremony should prepare for the fall season by purchasing one of their heavy knit sweaters on sale now at Shop Jake.

Eat 'n' Shop: Shopsin's

Shopsins_2 It only took me four tries to eat at Shopsin's. The first time was July 3rd, and apparently they were closing early for the holiday. The second attempt was one of those hot, sticky days where I started hallucinating fellow passengers on the subway platform were actually whole chickens turning in a convection oven. When I finally got to the Essex Street Market, the grate was down again with a sign, "Too hot to cook." On the third try, it was my fault, as I forgot they were closed on Mondays, although the infamously prickly owner was sitting there. When I asked if he would be open on Tuesday, he mumbled something like "not dependable" in response. Finally, after deciding I might just give up on the place, a day of decent weather and a rumbling morning stomach encouraged me to give it one more shot.

The gate was open and Kenny was chatting away with someone. We asked if we should just sit anywhere. "Why not imagine you're customers, and see what happens," he replied obliquely. What followed was a pretty stinking delicious breakfast that finally brought me around to the cult of Kenny. As many have mentioned, it's mind-blowing how many different dishes he and staff whip up in such a tiny space. I had an eggs, rice, cheese and spicy bean dish, while my dining companion had huevos rancheros. Spiciness is specified by 1-10 and my 7 was pretty much right on. Both dishes exuded just the right kind of homeyness you want from breakfast fare.

Next time you're doing some shopping in the Lower East Side and want a quick, soul-satisfying breakfast or lunch, this is definitely the spot--just make sure to come with a backup plan!

Green Fashion Art

We all know green fashion--check out our list of eco-friendly shops--is the new hotness, and maybe one day we'll even prefer fiber labels over fashion brand labels! I came across some eco-fashion enthusiasm during my mini-vacate in New Haven, Conn., this weekend (only an hour and a half on the Metro-North rail). On my leisure stroll through downtown Yale, I came across this recycled plastic bag dress at ArtSpace. The exhibit entitled 101 Dresses was dedicated to Eleanor Estes, a local writer who wrote a children's book, The Hundred Dresses, chronicling the pressures of clothing identity for a young Polish immigrant girl. Focused on fashion as a reflection of contemporary art ideas, the exhibit also addressed environmental sustainability issues. From sculpture to multimedia to paintings, it included a runway show displaying some of the best recycled fashions in the city and a clothing swap event right inside the gallery. Beside addressing the environmental cause, 101 Dresses also delved into the garment industry and its history in New Haven.

For locals looking to recycle their wardrobes, stay tuned to New York's own Clothing Swap organization for events and visit the Cooper Hewit's exhibit Design for the Other 90% and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum for great examples of fashion and its relation to social issues.

Tradeshow

Today marks the last day in New York for the first annual United Trade Show at Skylight. Featuring a slew of independent fashion labels, the clothing trade show focuses exclusively on urban and streetwear styles. Not open to the public, boutiques and buyers get to scope out the latest from brands such as Cardboard Robot, Mishka NYC, Fred Flare, Royal Elastics and Bijules NYC. For two days, screen print tees, exclusive footwear and arty hand bags fill the showroom, representing interesting collaborations between street artists and fashion designers. For a few local shops selling urban wear check out Ssur Plus, Reed Space, 10 Deep and Atmos.

The fashion calendar looks bleak as we await the start of Project Runway and the fashion shows in September, but there are a few ways to tide us over 'till then. Check out the following five events, as well as our Weekly Hot List, for ideas on how to beat the heat in true New York fashion.

1. Break out your bandannas and tambourines and roll out to Coney Island this weekend for the free Siren Music Festival.

2. For you geeks and bookworms, Union Square will be full of costumed and anxious fans awaiting the midnight sale of the last Harry Potter book tonight at Barnes and Nobles.

3. Boozing fashionistas alert: the Hanger Bar, which is fully equipped with a clothing boutique, now has drink specials named after famous fashion designers.

4. Squeeze into your asymmetrical dresses with ruffled hemlines and hit up the Manhattan Haitian Dance Party at S.O.B's.

5. Hit up the LES this Sunday for food, clothes and textiles at the Lower Feast Side festival.

Beach Season!

The countdown begins, T minus 4 days before New York beaches open. Some of you will be staying in the city for the old Memorial Day standby: BBQs, rooftop parties and gin 'n juice. The rest of us may consider lunching at the fake and bake to prepare for the beach beat down. In either case having a sexy swimsuit is essential to both New Yorkers.

Consider these luscious one-piece suits for a new take on the old two-piece and peruse over our list of swim shops in New York to start the beach season. Hit up Target for Patrick Robinson's medallion one-piece suit for $29.99 or Urban Outfitters for this red-striped trendier number for $88. For ballers looking for a sleeker look, head uptown to Norma Kamali for an incredible selection of metallic foil swimsuits starting around $200. Happy shopping and don't forget your sunscreen this weekend!

Sneak a Peek: Banyan Tree Spa

BanyantreeblogThis cozy little window-side pedicure nook has been luring Ludlow Street locals into the brand-new Banyan Tree Spa for but a couple weeks, and word is already spreading.

It could be the calming touches from Thailand--dangling golden bells, imprints on the wall of leaves from the meditation tree, the frangipani flowers strewn about, the beautifully woven blankets across the beds. Maybe it's the signature, Thai-inspired black pepper body treatment that attacks cellulite with a spicy heat from pepper oils. Or maybe it's the array of organic nail polishes.

Any way you look at it, this new import has got a lot going for it. Check out the spa's website for a full menu.

Go High-Waisted?

GreyantDieselssjeans

Are you beginning to feel the extremities of denim fashion? First it was low-low-waisted and now it's a super high-waist with an extra 20 inches of fabric at the hem. Can anyone, besides Kate Moss circa 1990s, pull off the high-waisted jean? Recently, I've seen cute girls rock these jeans with a pair of high heels and an appropriately shaped top but the majority of the time I'm thinking, is the mom jean really coming back into fashion? Decide for yourself by checking out this latest trend at these New York stores and let us know if you'll be jumping on this bandwagon.
