Preppy for Spring

Rugby is Ralph Lauren's attempt to appeal to the youth market. At first I thought it was just going to be Abercrombie & Fitch 2.0, but the brand has proven to be more sophisticated than that. I just got these pictures of the spring 2008 collection. I love the vintage style of the seersucker jacket and shorts (top left) and the high-waisted chino trousers (top right). They're modern and sexy with a nod to the past, like something a girl would wear to a risqué 1940s picnic. The blue wool suit (below) has a slim, sharp cut, making it charmingly retro preppy, not gag-reflex popped-collar modern preppy.

Check out the entire spring collection at Rugby's NYU-adjacent store.

Unionsquaremarket

1. 'Tis the season of holiday markets! Buy some fudge, hit the Bryant Park ice rink or find a unique gift from one NYC's many crafty holiday market vendors.

2. Is there anything better than devoting your Wednesday evening to shopping at The Gen Art Fashion Sale, drinking cocktails and getting your hair and nails done? No, unless of course you're watching Project Runway.

3. Forgo Sunday mass this weekend and check out the art show by the politicking British graffiti artist Banksy at the Vanina Holasek Gallery.

4. Sunday boasts an armload of crafts and art shows. Hit up the Dirt Cheap One Day Art Fair at the Stain bar in Williamsburg or the Astoria Craft Collective Holiday Show at the Waltz Astoria.

5. Wanna have a chat with Bruno Frisoni, the brains behind the famous design house that created the stiletto heel? Hit up the Q&A with the Roger Vivier genius tonight at the French Institute.

Tunic Sweater Swingcoat

Just when you thought you were outgrowing the pastel sweatshirts and jersey mini-dresses at Forever 21, the cheap knock-off chain debuts its new line, Twelve By Twelve. Think of Twelve as H&M meets Zara, offering mature and modest selections while maintaining the low cost. The new line dives back in history for inspiration and breaks up the collection into various themes including a "Modern Art" line filled with optical prints and micro minis, a "Dandy Doll" line influenced by 70s boy-chic and a "Vintage Couture" collection copying the great couturiers of the 20th century. Those of you not on the Anna Sui against Forever 21 campaign can check out the new line at the Union Square store, but be warned, it'll be a mad house in there.

Of all the sticky, sweet summer fruits, cherries have to be the greatest, and the Greenmarket crop this year has been especially tasty. We love the Union Square market, mostly because of its proximity to a gazillion trains, and it seems many NYC chef do too. In honor of the cherry, we've come up with a list of five tasty cherry dishes popping up everywhere from cocktails to pork belly, and where the chefs do their shopping. What's your favorite Greenmarket, dear readers?

Eat 'n' Shop: Maoz

Falafel_maoz Union Square has a ton of cool stores, but when you want a quick snack to keep your engine running, it isn't exactly a cheap eats mecca. Other than Whole Foods, which can cause a whole lot of stress (and isn't really that cheap), the best option in the neighborhood right now is Maoz. This European chain dishes up fresh, crisp falafel sandwiches with a cool twist: You get to stuff your pita from a salad bar stocked with things like beets, carrots and pickles. And though the few seats in the tiny space fills up fast, you're right across the street from the park, one of the best outdoor dining spots in the whole city. Grab a bench, dig in, and start scoping out the fashion parade.
