Meet Alex D., part-time bartender, full-time law school student (where he ranked first in his class last term), and sometime-actor (voice-overs, commercials, and even the occasional indie movie). With so much spare time on his hands, it was no surprise he was practically begging to participate in this interview. Let me re-phrase that. I was begging him to participate in this interview. Luckily (and in the interests of full disclosure), he's a good friend of mine, so he begrudgingly agreed.

How long have you been a bartender?
About six years.

Where else have you worked in NYC?

All over--from upscale clubs to hole-in-the-wall Irish pubs.

What is your own drink of choice?
O'Doul's.

What’s your specialty drink / favorite to make?
Amstel Light. I also make a mean sidecar.

What do you consider to be a good tip? Are most customers good tippers?

Fifty bucks and a bag of blow. Just kidding. I'm always happy with a dollar a drink, and most customers manage that.

What’s the best night of the week to go out / be a bartender?
We're consistently busy on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, though other days of the week can be pretty good too, depending on what's going on in the neighborhood. Summers are generally slower than the rest of the year, though this summer I was surprised to see how many people skipped the Hamptons scene to stay in the city on the weekends--our outdoor patio was packed every night.

Worst/best pickup scenarios you’ve observed from behind the bar?
An exceptionally drunk girl, who hadn't said a word to me the entire night, passed me a bar napkin that said, "If you're not gay and don't have a girlfriend, call me."  I wrote back on another napkin, "Sorry, I'm gay, and I have a girlfriend."

Do you routinely get hit on by drunk girls?  Do you routinely hit on drunk girls?
I'm sure every bartender in New York gets hit on pretty regularly (excluding those with obvious facial deformities). There's just something about being the only sober person in the room that draws people to you. It's an interesting experiment in human social interaction every night.

When you’re not working, where do you like to drink?
In bed.

Do you prefer working with guys or girls? Is it true that female bartenders bring in better tips?
I like a mix--one girl, one guy behind the bar. That way, the girl can take all the male customers and get them riled up, and the guy can take all the female customers and make them giggle. When that happens, better tips all around.

What’s the biggest misconception / assumption people make about bartenders?
That we're only flirting with you to make tips. Sometimes, I'm flirting with you because you're really hot.
